This is a quote from an imageboard that I frequent:
"Something that needs to be brought up is how inefficient it can be to try and cook for one. I'm 21 and live alone, and got kind of curious about cooking so tried to take it up. If I buy a loaf of bread, half of it gets thrown away. Fresh vegetables are likely to get thrown away, and I'm sure not going to the grocery store every goddamn week to restock for myself. Even things that aren't perishable, dried spices and such, a small amount is going to sit in my cabinet for months. And if I want any kind of variety, I'll end up buying 10 different containers of spices and they'll all be a third gone by the time my lease is up and it all gets pitched.
Also, this probably isn't the right thread for this, but some people seem to be oblivious to the fact that a lot of people just don't care how healthy their food is. I was a fat kid, lived in the dorms for two years and got huge, now I'm living off campus, eat a ton of fast food and microwaved crap, and have lost lots of weight just by the virtue of consuming less. My insides may be turning to crap, and I don't look too good without a shirt, but by the time a chick sees me with my shirt off she's drunk and in my apartment. Mission already accomplished.
The third thing that strikes me about the arguments people are posting here is that a lot of you either put no value on your time at all, or assume that every single person enjoys cooking. Yeah, it's cheaper to buy the ingredients and make your own pizza, say five bucks. But if you forgo delivery, everyone is handing out large pizzas for ten bucks. For me, the five bucks is worth saving a trip to the grocery store, prep time, cook time, and dishes. And a lot of you make pizza better than you get at pizza hut. More power to you, but I don't. Sure I could learn. But that's time I'm not playing Starcraft or studying."
I didn't really have to reply to it, the lines I highlighted here show the ridiculous mentality of today's American teens. Here are the facts anyway for the curious:
-Pizza hut NY Pizza:
$10 on sale, $18 regular price, plus delivery fees and/or gratuity, and wait time is 20 minutes to 50 minutes. For a single pizza, SINGLE topping.
A 5lb bag of flour = $2
A 3lb bag of tomatoes = $2
A 2lb block of Cheese = $3
Extra toppings and stuff = $5 for the sake of argument.
Same $10 bucks, but with this setup four pizza can be baked. waiting time = 20 minutes to 50 minutes.
So after making one single pizza, you basically get three pizzas for free. That saves $30~$54, and there are more toppings to throw on when it's done in home. So he pretty much undersold the argument; it's not twice as cheap, it's four times as cheap and no time was saved at all.
Afterwards, he proceeded to attack me personally, and I was done with the argument when ad hominen began.
Cooking is important, because it has always been a way to preserve culture in any heritage. It will save a lot of money, and frankly most people wast the time they "saved" with dumb shit any way. Any skill related to survival is essential to self dependence, cooking is no exception. The same folks who cry out about someone else being too controlling only do so because they have to depend on others. waa my rent is too expensive, but I can't be bothered to get a fucking roommate. waa I feel like shit because my room looks like shit but I don't want to clean after myself. waa I don't have any money because I have to spent $300 a month on food and $400 on videogames. waa waa waa. It's sad that people can't do stuff for themselves.
